The interview is an opportunity for you to expand on the information you have already provided to the company with your application.

As you only get one chance to make a first impression, make sure you are on time, be well groomed and dressed appropriately.

Don’t forget to smile throughout the interview, nobody wants to hire a sad / unhappy person.

Be friendly but professional and above all do not give smart answers.

Research the company beforehand and appear knowledgeable about their firm, its products and services.

Try to have a grasp of their market and competitors and let them know what you have to offer and how you can fit in to their organisation.

You can expect the interviewer to have a copy of your CV and the job spec. in front of them – This will form the agenda for the interview.

Anticipate questions that will arise from your CV – such as, why did you leave your job, what challenges did you face, give examples of how you overcame difficulties etc.

Highlight your skills and expertise and make sure you let the interviewer know what you have to offer their company going forward  and not just dwell on your past performances.

Be honest and don’t waffle, if you don’t know the answer to a question tell them that you don’t know. Honesty is the best policy !!!

Don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer questions about the job and the challenges it brings. Enquire about induction, further training and promotional prospects.

At the end of the interview, Thank the interviewer for their time and let them know if you are still interested in the position and if so, that you would love to join their firm.

Follow this up with a thank you letter or email.
